Mahjong Mayhem in Manhattan: One Man, Three Masters, and a Shirt That Lied

There are humbling moments that belong in a Brandon Sanderson novel, except the hero isn’t discovering epic powers; he’s discovering just how badly he can lose at mahjong. And this, dear readers, was my very first pick-up game in a lively New York City mahjong club. No regular group. No safety net. Just me, the lone man, three sharp women, and a room full of clacking tiles that seemed personally offended by my presence.
You can see the scene right here in the photo. The club is bright and buzzing, all high ceilings, big windows letting in that classic Manhattan light, and tables scattered across polished wooden floors. People are deep in their games everywhere you look, some laughing, some laser-focused. Our table had a cheerful green felt top, tiles already marching into formation like reluctant soldiers. I’m the grinning guy in the loud mahjong-tile shirt (my so-called lucky one), waving like I’d already won something. Spoiler alert: I had not.
The three wonderful women at the table welcomed me with open arms and zero mercy: Grace with her floral top and easy smile, the woman in black waving hello, and our focused player with her back to the camera. They were clearly veterans of these pick-up nights, while I was the enthusiastic tourist who’d wandered into the arena thinking his Penn State AI brain could crunch the probabilities. Turns out the tiles had other plans.
I played horribly. Gloriously horribly. My discards were so generous I might as well have gift-wrapped them with a bow and a Grateful Dead lyric. “Here you go, ladies, perfect tile, compliments of the house!” I’d think, only for one of them to pounce with the calm satisfaction of a character completing a flawless magical working. The banter flew fast and funny. “Another donation, Professor?” they’d tease as my lucky shirt, and I watched another hand slip away. I built walls. They built empires. I recognized patterns from my master’s studies; the tiles recognized a sucker.
At one point I thought I had a decent hand brewing. The shirt was finally going to deliver! I reached for victory with all the drama of a Shardblade summon… and fed the table exactly what they needed. Laughter erupted. I threw my head back and joined in, because at my age, you learn that some nights are for winning and others are for providing quality entertainment.
Yet for all the spectacular losing, it was a wonderful evening. Between my comedic blunders, we swapped travel stories, chatted about books that transport you to other worlds, and enjoyed the easy camaraderie of a room full of strangers united by clacking tiles and good company.
If you ever stumble into an NYC mahjong pick-up game, do yourself a favor: wear the loudest shirt you own, prepare to lose with a smile, and soak up the fun. It’s far more entertaining than any perfectly plotted epic. My “lucky” shirt and I have some serious practicing to do before the rematch, and if you want a loud one of your own, it lives with the rest of our men’s mahjong gear.
Until next time, keep traveling, keep reading those grand tales, and may your future hands be luckier than mine. The tiles are calling… and they’re still laughing.
